Dental Veneers – The Myth Explained

Dental Veneers are one of the most effective and popular cosmetic dentistry treatments as they can correct a vast array of problems.  Whether you have crooked, overlapping or even discoloured teeth then Dental Veneers can definitely help change your smile.  Dental Veneers are usually made from Porcelain although can be made from a composite material.  Porcelain looks more natural and they never lose their shine or colour.  Dental Veneers are prepared and fitted by a Cosmetic Dentist.  For the best results it is important to find a Cosmetic Dentist that has experience in Cosmetic Dentistry especially Dental Veneers.

 What are Veneers?

Porcelain Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain that gets bonded over your natural tooth.  Minimal preparation of your own teeth may be required to make room for the Veneers.  It is important to find a dentist who knows how you want your new smile to look and make your veneers to your own specifications advising you along the way.  It takes 4 appointments for your Veneer Treatment to be completed.  This is spaced out over 2 weeks.  This consists of a preparation and fit appointment and also 2 review appointments.  It is vital that you attend the review appointments as we can get your feedback about the temporary veneers fitted and make any changes before your final Porcelain Veneers are made.

Will Veneers feel different in my mouth?

Made by the correct Laboratory and experienced Cosmetic Dentist your will hardly know that you have Porcelain Veneers fitted except from when you look in the mirror and find the perfect smile staring back at you!  They are very comfortable as the Cosmetic Dentist thoroughly polishes and smoothes the Veneers when fitting them.  You can brush and floss your teeth as normal.  Regular dental examinations and Hygiene appointments are recommended to help ensure your Veneers last you as long as possible.  Although very strong your new Veneers need to be treated with care.

Health Benefits of Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers are not only made for cosmetic reasons, they can also be made and fitted to protect teeth.  Often cracks can appear on teeth and after time can become more visible.  As we age our teeth tend to become darker which makes the cracks stand out more.  Veneers can be placed over these teeth to prevent any more cracks from forming and to protect the remaining tooth from breaking. A very good reason for having veneers is if you have worn teeth.

Porcelain Veneers are a type of Cosmetic Dentistry.  There are other types of Cosmetic Dentistry that will alter the colour and shape of your teeth but Porcelain Veneers are the most popular.  They are a thin porcelain shell rather like a finger nail that is bonded over you natural teeth.  They are extremely strong and long lasting providing you take good care of them.

Are my teeth going to be filed down to stumps?

These is very common question. The answer is NO!. If  your veneers are being done by a good cosmetic dentist there should be minimal preparation of your teeth. On average teeth preparation is around half to one millimetre in the hands of our cosmetic dentist.

Dental Veneers can be used to:

  • Change crooked, overcrowded teeth.
  • Improve damaged and chipped teeth.
  • Close small gaps in your mouth.
  • Improve the colour of your teeth.
  • Improve worn teeth

The benefits of having Porcelain Veneers are:

  • They will never discolour.  You can eat and drink anything you like and they will stay like new.
  • They will give you the perfect smile.
  • They will perfectly align your teeth.
  • They are long lasting.
  • It’s quicker to straighten your teeth with dental veneers than clear braces.

Other types of Veneers:

No Preparation Veneers

In many cases if your teeth are not crooked then you may not need any preparation of your teeth in order to have veneers. This depends on tooth to tooth and will be assessed at the planning stage.

Composite Veneers

An cheaper alternative to porcelain veneers are composite veneers. Composite veneers are made from resin. Composite veneers are are quicker, cheaper and may require less preparation of tooth (depending on each individual case). They do not last as long and are not as strong as porcelain veneers but are easier to repair.
