Dental Hygienist

At Perfect Smile Spa we offer a range of treatments to the best standards in Essex including dental hygiene service.

What is a Dental Hygienist?

A Dental Hygienist is specially trained in the prevention and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease, which is the main cause of adult tooth loss and to give advice on all aspects of oral health. In this appointment the hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums and give you oral hygiene instructions to help you maintain your oral hygiene at home.

What happens in a Dental Hygienist appointment?

The Dental Hygienist will:

  • Check the patient’s medical history and ask the patient if they have any dental problems.
  • Discuss oral health, for example the treatment and prevention of gum (periodontal) disease, receding gums, tooth wear.
  • Give oral hygiene advice, for example tooth brushing technique.
  • Check the appearance of the gums, see if there is any plaque or bleeding.
  • Remove any hard deposits (calculus) and stain by scaling the teeth.
  • Polish the teeth.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums. This is when the gums around the teeth become very red and swollen. Often the swollen gums bleed when they are brushed during cleaning.

What is periodontal disease?

Long-standing gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease. There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth. As the disease gets worse the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost, making the teeth loose. If this is not treated, the teeth may eventually fall out. In fact, more teeth are lost through periodontal disease than through tooth decay.

What is the cause of gum disease?

All gum disease is caused by plaque. Plaque is a film of bacteria which forms on the surface of the teeth and gums every day. Many of the bacteria in plaque are completely harmless, but there are some that have been shown to be the main cause of gum disease. To prevent and treat gum disease, you need to make sure you remove all the plaque from your teeth every day. This is done by brushing and flossing.

Now Perfect Smile Spa offers cleaning-only appointments, so you can take care of routine maintenance without visiting the dentist first.

Since 1st May 2013, regular cleaning has become even easier. The General Dental Council enacted a new policy that allows you to visit a hygienist or dental therapist without a dental prescription.

Good oral hygiene works for you by keeping your mouth free from plaque and tartar. Regular visits to the hygienist help identify problems as early as possible and also prevents potential complications. What’s more, a clean mouth has fresher breath, which benefits you at work as well as when out with friends.

Proper oral hygiene includes brushing and flossing regularly, as well as regular professional cleaning by the hygienist.

Your daily dental hygiene routine

Follow this simple routine for a perfect daily dental hygiene routine. Toothbrushes, mouthwash, flossing ribbon and tongue scrapers are all available from our practice.

  • Brush your mouth morning and night, concentrating on all areas of your teeth and gums
  • Use an electric toothbrush for maximum cleaning effect
  • Some patients can benefit from a good mouthwash after brushing
  • Daily flossing helps to remove plaque and tartar in between your teeth
  • We recommend a tongue scraper to remove any debris on your tongue
  • And of course a regular dental hygiene appointment with one of our experienced dental hygienists at our London surgery to remove plaque and tartar from those hard to reach areas

These regular cleanings allow our hygienists to help you prevent cavities and gum disease. We will examine your teeth carefully for obvious problems. Then we will gently clean, polish and spray your teeth to a dazzling shine.

Education is a valuable part of good mouth care from childhood onward. When you visit, we will demonstrate to you proper use of dental aids such as toothbrushes and dental floss. We also advise you about any new products coming available for home prevention.

Our Hygienist Sarah now also offers studio tooth whitening on the prescription of the dentist. Get your Essex white smile in less than an hour.
